Activities

Throughout the year the Guild regularly holds various activities as outlined below.

Carving Sessions (or Carve-Ins as we call them) are held in the D & T Block at the Portsmouth Grammar School (PGS),from about 0930 to 1600 usually on the first and third Saturday in the month from January to June and September to December. Members, male and female, come along to carve, talk, share ideas, learn and enjoy themselves. More information can be found here.

Visitors are welcome at any of the carving sessions to carve or to see what we are currently carving. If you would like to come along please send an n email to  the Secretary for further details.

Social Events The Guild holds various social events during the year. A Petanque challenge with a local club and a Christmas American Supper and Quiz are held at the Portchester Community Centre. Another social is a Presentation Dinner where competition results are announced. Other events may also be organised. More information can be found here.

Demonstrations The Guild demonstrates at various events, e.g. Wood Fairs, Local Fairs, Museums, etc., during the summer months. The Guild has its own colourful tents. The demonstrations are to promote woodcarving, display Members' completed carvings, encourage others to take-up woodcarving and possibly join the Guild. More information can be found here.

Competitions Two competitions are normally held each year. An annual competition, with different classes of carvings, is held in the summer, the date and venue being variable, and where the public are invited to vote. The second competition, held at the Guild’s AGM, is the Frank Leach Competition and voted for by Members. More information can be found here.

Recent projects have been for Havant Borough Council to depict scenes around Havant, the Friends of the Victory Museum in Portsmouth To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Trafalgar and The Friends of St Hubert’s Church, Idsworth to carve two Nativity sets for the Church.  More information can be found here.
